Hit the ground and feel the trail underfoot. Get up close and personal with Southeast Montana. This part of the state is full of hiking opportunities, from badlands to a lake surrounded by 1,000-foot-high canyon walls. You don’t need any special equipment or reservations, just a good pair of shoes, a bottle of water and a spirit of adventure. Walking in winter? That’s easy, with a pair of snowshoes.
Note: As of July 1, 2023, a conservation license is required for everyone age 12 and older to access most state lands, including wildlife management areas, fishing access sites and wildlife habitat protection areas, and all types of recreation—launching watercraft, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, etc. State parks are excluded from this requirement.
